Common Surgical Errors

During a typical surgery, even an outpatient procedure, there will be numerous points where a surgeon must be precise and uphold the highest standards of care. Each one of these moments is also a moment when a serious surgical error can occur. Establishing the validity of your claim and determining how much compensation you should be owed will rely on understanding the surgical error your doctor performed, as this can indicate cause and liability.

Some of the most common surgical errors are:

  • Anesthesia errors: Most surgeries will begin with anesthesia to render the patient unconscious. Anesthesiologists must be extremely careful when administering the drug, as too much can be lethal and too little could cause the patient to wake up in the middle of the procedure.
  • Incorrect operation: Failing to diagnose an injury or condition correctly could lead to a doctor recommending the wrong surgery. This surgical error is usually spurred on by the medical malpractice and negligence of a diagnosing doctor, not necessarily a surgeon.
  • Wrong body part or patient: Confusing medical records can lead to serious and dangerous complications in the operation room. There are many incidents each year in the country in which a patient receives surgery on the wrong body part, like the left leg instead of the right, or the wrong patient is operated upon altogether.
  • Foreign objects: One of the absolute most common surgical errors is leaving a foreign object inside a patient. Surgeons that are not paying close attention to their work may leave swabs, gauze, and even metal surgical tools inside a patient before sewing the incision or wound shut.
  • No informed consent: Ideally, patients will know as much about a surgical procedure before it begins. A doctor should tell the patient about the actual procedure, risks, benefits, lingering side effects, recovery time, and so on. Informed consent can only be gained after the patient is given this information. In emergency situations, informed consent may not be necessary.

Client Reviews
After my accident I was in so much pain and so confused that I didn't know where to go, so I contacted the Injury Law Center. Joe would sit and he would listen and talk to me and hear what I was saying and what was really going on with me. He explained everything. It really made a difference and gave me a peace of mind. I knew that he knew me well enough to take care of my best interests. He heard the story behind everything and made sure that the insurance company had to take action. Deb Brosnan
If someone I cared for was going to be going through something like this I would definitely recommend Injury Law Center as your first point of reference. My case went on for a very long time, over a year, and we were on very good terms the entire time. Attorney Russo came to visit me several times in the hospital and brought me things to do in rehab. They were very supportive the entire time. Injury Law Center was able to exceed my expectations and I am able to live comfortably without having to work. Valerie
I had a car accident that affected my business and my ability to deal with insurance companies was very difficult. Joe stayed the course and we were offered very fair compensation.I think it was because of Joe and the hard work of the team. It was a very long trial but it turned out to be in our favor which we were very happy about. Mat Morello
